Croatia – Lelek – Andromeda.
I don’t usually go for Balkan stuff. I detest Balkan Ballads with a hate often unmatched, so this is very not in my wheelhouse.
Having said that, it catches my attention from moment one and I think that’s born out of the fact I can equate this to My Sisters Crown and Tautemeitas as two examples of this ethereal type of song. I don’t think, however, it has the ‘grab me by the bollocks’ sound and tone either of those had, nor does it have the fit man factor of Fulen, another song of this genre that I liked… and I say that because as I write this, it’s on in the background, whilst my gaze is turned to my other screen writing this… and I think that sums it up nicely.
It’s good, don’t get me wrong, and there isn’t a lot like it in the contest but, and here’s the key, it doesn’t do enough or have enough for me. It’ll get its share of votes, for sure, but I’m just not convinced 5 Croat witches burning things to the ground is what Europe wants of a Saturday night – Where are the Swedish Firemen when you need them eh?
Phil’s Score – 5 Points
