Czechia’s 2026 entry is Daniel Zizka with ‘CROSSROADS’. An internal selection by ČT from more than 260 submissions and an audition round with voting from an international jury. And a demoscopic panel (no, me neither). The artist was revealed on 8 March, with the song following on 11 March. On paper, at least, this sounds like the sort of serious-minded contemporary ballad Czechia has increasingly liked to back: intimate, modern, and emotionally loaded.
The song itself sits in that now-familiar lane of restrained verses opening into a larger, more yearning chorus. Daniel starts from a low, hushed place and gradually pushes upwards, with the title stretched across the hook in a way that clearly wants to feel pivotal. There’s craft here, and no shortage of intent, but it all feels too self-conscious for me to commit. The parts are all present and correct, and yet the whole struggles to leave a strong imprint.
That’s a problem for a song relying on mood and emotional credibility. If the live vocal lands cleanly, the piece may gain urgency. If it doesn’t, there are way too many exposed places where things could come over as strained rather than stirring. Czechia performs in the first half of the second semi-final – not the kindest place for something this dependent on atmosphere. It’s on after the rather conventional, accessible pop of Luxembourg.
There isn’t much in the way of story to share about the song beyond what I said at the start of this review. It’s another internal pick from a broadcaster still trying to find some sort of reliable Eurovision recipe. Daniel himself is part of a younger generation of Czech artists, and the song was co-written with Viliam Béreš. That suggests ČT sees this as credible and current, even if not especially flashy.
History
Czechia’s recent record is respectable without being especially stable. Vesna gave the country a top ten finish in 2023, but Aiko missed the final in 2024. Androgynous Adonxs also fell short in 2025. The broader pattern since returning in 2015 is mixed. Capable of solid results, but just as capable of disappearing up its own arse in the semis.
As for 2026, this feels borderline to me. Juries may warm to the seriousness and the attempt at vocal drama – if he can pull that off. Televoters, though tend to need something a little more immediate to cut through. Qualification is possible, if Daniel manages to sell the anguish. Otherwise, ‘CROSSROADS’ risks becoming one of those tasteful entries people vaguely admire and then forget before the recap begins. Again, I’m voting on my personal opinion rather than where it might end up on the night, so…
