Anyway, I digress…. It is still a halfway house between a rock song and a ballad that, actually, works quite well. We all know that Kaliopi can sing, and despite me thinking that she might have to for this to qualify, I’m thinking that she is now on the cusp.
Kaliopi is representing FYR Macedonia at Eurovision 2012 in Baku with “Crno I Belo” (“Black and White”), performed in Macedonian. At this point, though, qualification is still undecided: she is due to perform second in the second semi-final on Thursday 24 May, right near the start of the show. The only thing that might scupper it is if the backing singers scream too much like they do in the video.
That video is not the Eurovision stage performance, incidentally. It has Kaliopi at a piano in an empty theatre or abandoned building, with the supporting musicians shown separately. Still, the black-and-white contrast is rather more than a title: the song plays with opposites such as truth and lies, happiness and sadness.
Visually, with it being called “Black and White”, you pays your money and takes your choice!!
Update: Kaliopi did qualify, finishing ninth in the second semi-final with 53 points. She then performed second in the Grand Final and finished 13th overall with 71 points.
