Phil’s Eurovision Countdown 2026 – Part Six – Belgium

Belgium – Essyla – Dancing on the Ice.

Image my disgust, dear reader, when I checked the lyrics out and realised that this song was not an ode to either Jane and Chris OR Lilah and Lewis and there wasn’t a twizzle or a Double Axel in sight. Having both piqued my interest *and* ruined it at the same time, I went into Belgium in a bit of a grump and, just so you know, this didn’t ease that grump.

“It’s Rhythm Inside retooled for a lady person isn’t it?”

That was my first thought when you see all the white and black contrasting backgrops  in the video and, presumably, on the USB stick they’ll have submitted to ORF as well.   Then when she starts to sing it gets old very quickly because that Chorus/Hook is repeated about nine times thoughout three minutes but after then second go around, it’s just beginning to get on my nerves.  If it hasn’t caught your attention by then – another few goes isn’t really gonna help matters.

Essyla is deliberately trying to look fierce because she’s singing about… well I don’t know what and that’s even looking at the lyric.  They actually make little to no sense to someone wot speaks da king’s English like wot I does but I guess its supposed to be all about empowerment and how her relationship has died…. But a televoter won’t have the gumption to look at Eurovision World, work it out for themselves and then think about voting for it, because they’ll be onto the next one.  The juries will go “what?”  and all of this leaves Belgium ending up miffed and having *another* potential failure.

Phil’s Score – 3 Points.
