Denmark – Før Vi Går Hjem – Søren Torpegaard Lund.
Bearing in mind I’ve just written and you’ve just read the phrase “It’s just like last year’s winner”, we get a song that is just like last year’s winner! So why would this song be any different to that song? I hear you cry. (Or maybe I don’t, who knows!)
They are, clearly, two sides of the same coin with both of them being very angsty rip offs of JJ’s Wasted Love, but the Danish song, somehow, feels more genuine in both its approach and presentation, possibly because we have seen it in a national final setting, and not in a video presented to the masses. Soren is a good performer for Denmark, I’ll say that, and his goth-in-a-box routine is very cleverly done – if he can reproduce that on stage in Vienna, I think it is going to be visually arresting for the viewing public.
Whist it’s very busy on stage, musically it’s something different entirely. It’s… actually a very good song, with no strings and no pretentiousness. Well apart from Soren trying desperately to turn into Denmark’s Damiano Davide halfway through the song, but even that is very cleverly done. I mean watching any man twerk is always a bonus for the likes of me, but this is not about me, it’s about the song and it builds really nicely and doesn’t run out of steam at the end.
He never overplays the immense amount of choreo in this song and keeps the song going through all the machinations. It doesn’t let you tear your eyes from the screen, but it’s all so smoothly done that it looks and sounds like a complete package. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this and it should place very highly – possibly even in the top 5.
