Cyprus – Antigoni – Jalla.
I hate this song with the fury of a thousand suns. I know I shouldn’t have personal opinions when it comes to the website, and I’m very careful about that in some respects … and I know that a shedload of people have had a hand, or toe, or hair, in the writing of this song, and their hard work should not be dismissed…
But…
The first thought I had in my head was “haven’t Cyprus and Greece entered this song for the last ten years?”
Musically it’s not groundbreaking, or even anything different, and the team behind it seem to have looked at every single Cypriot/Greek cliché in the book, put them in a food mixer (or chatgpt) and this what was spat out. No wonder there has been a slight backlash about the video being stereotypical… because it is! It’s the stereotypical girl shaking what her mother gave her over the screen at me and, honestly, I’m bored of it. I want Cyprus to enter something decent, and not a fourth cousin twice removed of a song that did well nearly a decade ago now.
They’ll learn nothing from whatever position it ends up in – because as a piece of music it’s not strong enough to win, not even close, and when they get that mid-table result, Panik Records and CYBC won’t part ways, or even think about what went not right, they’ll blame everyone else. Again.
Phil’s Score – 4 Points.
