Bulgaria’s return to Eurovision after a three-year absence comes via DARA and ‘Bangaranga’, chosen through BNT’s rather elaborate three-part national selection. That alone gives the entry a bit of narrative weight: a comeback country, a recognisable domestic pop name, and a song designed to not tit about when the lights go up. Bulgaria will perform in the first half of the second semi-final.
‘Bangaranga’ starts at full tilt. It’s a modern kind of calculated-for-Eurovision pop construction, packed with rhythmic switches, chopped-up momentum and a chorus that feels engineered to lodge itself in the brain whether invited or not. Some listeners will hear that as contemporary and competitive. Others may feel it’s chasing a sound that mattered more a few years back. Something that’s got to the party after the best crisps have been dipped in the better dips.
DARA is plainly a capable performer, and that may be the song’s chief asset in Vienna: the sense that a seasoned stage presence could give shape to material that otherwise risks feeling overly-engineered for Eurovision. For me, the problem isn’t energy. It’s a lack of identity.
There’s an interesting context around the selection. BNT first chose DARA as the artist in January. She performed three possible Eurovision songs in a later show, with ‘Bangaranga’ winning both a jury and a public vote. The song was written by Anne Judith Wik, Cristian Tarcea, DARA herself and Dimitris Kontopoulos. Which perhaps explains why it feels less like a spontaneous outburst than a carefully assembled attempt to match current contest habits. On the ‘hurrah’ side, Bulgaria hasn’t crept back into Eurovision. BNT has returned with something unmistakably cut to a pattern, even if not everyone will find that a compliment.
History
Bulgaria’s track record remains oddly split. Its high point remains Kristian Kostov’s runner-up finish in 2017. Victoria gave the country a Grand Final 11th place in 2021. On its last actual appearance in 2022, blandness incarnate courtesy of Intelligent Music Project saw ‘Intention’ finish a deserved 16th in its semi-final. This is a country with peaks, absences and the occasional abrupt reality check.
As for 2026, qualification feels possible rather than comfortable. DARA is opening the secind semifinal and there’s enough attack and instantness here to make an impression, especially if DARA sells it harder than the song can sell itself. Juries may be cooler unless the live vocal and staging add shape and authority. Televoters could go either way. This feels less like a sure-fire return than a plausible scrape-through.
