Eurovision 2026 Review: Austria

Austria’s host entry for Vienna 2026 is COSMÓ with ‘Tanzschein’, selected through ORF’s national final Vienna Calling – Who Will Sing for Austria? on 20 February. Coming straight after JJ’s victory with ‘Wasted Love’, it was always likely that the host broadcaster might favour something a little less obviously built to win again. On that front, very much mission accomplished. COSMÓ won a piss-weak 12-song final with the public vote and enough jury support to edge home by two points, so this was not exactly smuggled through under cover of darkness.

‘Tanzschein’ is a German-language mid-tempo number with a cool, slightly withdrawn feel, and a strong sense of being content to remain exactly where it starts. There’s shape to it, but little in the way of build. For a song about dancing, it feels oddly drab, as if it is waiting for some bigger moment that never quite arrives. It’s neither offensive, nor chaotic. It’s not even embarrassingly bad. ‘Tanzschein’ is simply unremarkable. Forgettable even – and that’s the last thing you need in a show that relies on people remembering and caring enough to vote.

History

Austria’s recent track record is about as uneven as it is successful. Teya & Salena finished 15th in 2023, Kaleen dropped to 24th in 2024, and then JJ won the whole thing in 2025 with 436 points. That’s not so much steady progress as a fairly wild swing of the pendulum. I rather suspect it’s swinging back this year.

As hosts, Austria are already in the final and will perform last in the running order, in slot 25. In theory, that is useful. In practice, a closing spot only helps if the song gives people something to remember.
