It’s become a thing lately that more and more countries are spurning English, and reverting to using their own languages. It’s a good thing surely, and shows how diverse our continent is.

for many years – when they could do anyway, our friends in Greece were picking songs in English. Or, at least, mixing it up with Greek. But for the last three contests it’s been the Hellenic tongue all the way. In 2025 Greece sent today’s birthday girl Κλαυδία Παπαδοπούλου/Klavdia Papadopoulou to Basel with a song about homelands. It’s good old wholesome stuff. Comparisons were made with a Greek singer who represented another country in the 1960s, which may have also worked in Klavdia’s favour. In that Grand Final in Switzerland, she finished sixth, their best result in over 10 years.

Klavdia is 24 today.

Χρόνια πολλά, Κλαυδία!
