Moldova has officially announced its return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026, marking a comeback after a one-year absence from the competition. They’re just the latest smaller broadcaster to take advantage of what’s looking increasingly like a last minute ‘fire sale’ on places at the next edition of Eurovision by organisers the EBU. The contest faces potential snubs from several other nations, depending on whether Israel is in or out.

Today’s news was confirmed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Moldova’s national broadcaster, Teleradio Moldova (TRM), during a press conference held this morning at the Arena Chișinău. Martin Green, director of Eurovision, stated: “Moldova’s return reminds us of our community’s strength, the power of values and what it truly means to be united through music”.

Moldova’s Eurovision Journey

Moldova had taken part in the Eurovision Song Contest every year since its debut in 2005, building a reputation for vibrant performances and creative entries. The country’s best result came in 2017, when Sunstroke Project finished third with “Hey Mamma!”. Moldova’s withdrawal from the 2025 contest was attributed to “a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges,” according to TRM.

Revamped National Selection

For 2026, TRM has announced a major overhaul of its national selection process. The broadcaster has appointed two experienced producers, Serghei Orlov and Roman Burlaca, to coordinate the revamped national final. The selection will feature a jury of 20 members, 15 Moldovan and five international jurors, to ensure transparency and competitiveness. The window for song submissions opens on 7 November 2025 and will remain open for 30 days, with the final scheduled for 17 January at the Chișinău Arena.
