Francesco Gabanni has been named winner of the 2017 Sanremo Festival. In a press conference after the show, he confirmed he will accept the offer to represent Italy with ‘Occidentali’s karma’ at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest.
Sixteen songs were in the running, with three making a super-final sing off. Ermal Meta came third and Fiorella Mannoia was runner up.
Francesco rose to fame after winning the Newcomer’s section of the 2016 Sanremo Music Festival with the song “Amen”.
His Eurovision song takes a jab at how eastern spiritual beliefs are rebranded for western consumers.
