What the hell happened in the first Eurovision week of 2021?

That is the question most of you ask all the time — and one I certainly ask myself — so welcome to the first instalment of What the hell happened? This week, Norway and Lithuania opened their national selections, offering us a mixture of polished television, highly average songs and a few results worth discussing.

Norway

NRK delivered the typically high-quality production we have come to expect. The songs, however, were a rather more mixed affair. Some highly average entries failed to make it through, including a rock song from Johnny Logan’s older and fatter twin. The men blowing their own instruments, on the other hand, qualified.

Lithuania

Lithuania, once again refusing to deviate from the deviant, took us on a journey from the ridiculous to the downright average. Ten songs battled for places in the semi-final, and five of them qualified.

I believe this is the winner.
