Alfred García did not drop out of Benidorm Fest 2023. At the time of publication, he remained one of the 18 confirmed contestants in Spain’s national final, due to perform “Desde que tú estás”.
The claim that García had accepted an invitation from the Spanish Film Academy, or was being promoted as the new face of Spanish cinema for a documentary directed by Pedro Almodóvar, cannot be verified and should not have appeared as fact. A rather more conventional Eurovision story followed.
Operación Triunfo
García gained national recognition when he took part in series nine of the reality television talent competition Operación Triunfo, where he finished in fourth place. He went on to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal, alongside Amaia Romero, with the song “Tu canción”, finishing in twenty-third place.
He did compete in Benidorm Fest 2023, performing “Desde que tú estás” in the second semi-final on 2 February. The song was written by García and Raúl Gómez, and the staging took a retro look back at the historic Festival de Benidorm. Sadly for Alfred, the performance did not qualify for the final, held on 4 February. Blanca Paloma won that final with “Eaea”.
