For the first time, the final of Norway’s premier Eurovision selection show, the Melodi Grand Prix 2026 (MGP), will be staged in the town of Lillehammer — specifically in Håkons Hall, previously used for the 1994 Winter Olympics.
Project leader Mads Tørklep is promoting the town as the ideal backdrop for Norway’s largest live music show. The finals will take place on Saturday 28 February 2026.
The selection process for MGP 2026 is already underway. NRK reports that around 1,500 songs are under consideration. Tarjei Strøm, the programme’s music director, remarked that the quality of entries and breadth of styles was unusually strong … but then again, he’d hardly own up if it wasn’t, now would he?
The final will feature 10 acts. Nine selected conventionally, with the tenth finalist earning their slot via a January radio duel: eight acts will compete in that online/radio-driven round, and the public will vote their favourite forward.
The presentation of the nine acts is set for 19 January, with the songs themselves being released on 26 January.
