20 September – Let the day get its rest now

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We like to celebrate people who do the singing at our favourite TV show. But not everyone who makes a name for themselves is a singer. They could solely be a musician. And some musicians of note have graced those famous stages around Europe.

Today we look at the “song” that maybe had the fewest words in any winning Eurovision lyric. It was a song, but it had a large mid-tro (if that’s a word). Performing thid mid-tro was today’s birthday girl Fionnuala Sherry. She was an Irish lass performing in a song representing Norway – but you knew that already. She’d become friends with native Norwegian Rolf Løvland and their Secret Garden project temporarily broke the stranglehold that RTÉ had on the contest. But it did – arguably – mean that Ireland had four wins in a row. Beat that, Sw*d*n!

Fionnuala is 63 today.

Lá breithe shona duit, a Fhionnuala./Gratulerer med dagen, Fionnuala!
