No, I have not taken leave of my senses. They have turned Georgia’s Eurovision 2012 entry, I’m a Joker by Anri Jokhadze, into such a complete mess it’s fab-u-lous!
Women on stairs, a dyed-blond-haired man, lots of mincing, a grand piano, screaming, sparkly megaphones I hear…. There were also metal cubes, smoke, flames, rapidly moving stars and circles, Georgian drumming and a sudden costume change from red monk-like robes into black and silver. Quite a lot to unpack, then.
It’s car crash TV, and yet part of me sees this qualifying. Mind you, this was my reaction to the rehearsal and preview material on 16 May 2012, before Georgia actually performed in the second semi-final. It’s not qualifying, btw.
Jokhadze had been chosen through Georgia’s televised national final, and “I’m a Joker” went on to become the country’s first Eurovision entry to include the Georgian language. He was also Georgia’s first male solo Eurovision representative.
In the event, Georgia was not announced as a qualifier: it finished 14th in the semi-final with 36 points, its first failure to reach the Eurovision final since debuting in 2007.
But at this stage? It makes me smile in all the wrong ways….
