Way back when, when Austria only had one win under their belts, they kept trying and trying. They attempted with folks, butterflies, and even leotard-clad women in helmets.
In 1990, Austria’s approach was a mix of languages. At a contest in Zagreb, when some large piece of masonry had fallen down in Berlin, today’s birthday girl Simone Stelzer used English, French and R*ss*an in her German-language song. It was all a very jolly performance, and might have done better, had hers been the only song about walls coming down. As it happened, there was a clutch of others, meaning Simone only finished tenth. Still, it’s a simple song and very very catchy.
Simone is 56 today.
Frohe Geburtstag, Simone!
