Eurovision Song Contest 2025 - Countdown song reviews by OnEurope

GEORGIA – Freedom – Mariam Shengelia

Georgia rarely get it approximately right at Eurovision. They seem to have a musical tradition that’s only accessible to the rest of Europe if there’s a Y in the month and the moon is in conjunction with Uranus.

I’m not sure where the moon is this year, but I don’t think it’s where it needs to be. This is a thoroughly fussy and overcomplicated composition that never quite decides what it is. Is it another attempt to win last year’s contest without understanding how it was won? Perhaps.

Mariam does appear to be thoroughly in control of the situation, there are parts when we break into classic 70s chanson, it hints at times that it wants to be a Bond theme, it flirts with musical theatre, it nods towards traditional Georgian rhythms, and then it… ends. None of the themes have really been resolved and it just feels like it’s been a sumptuous waste of everybody’s time.

It’s got plenty of ingredients, but for me it’s not really a satisfying dish.
