25 October – I hear thе owls and my neighbours too

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We all have our favourite countries, for many different reasons. You might be from that country. You might love that country’s culture. Or you could just admire them for trying year after year.

As we know, Portugal have had one solitary (and deserved) win in 483 attempts. The people of Europe may not always like RTP’s choices, but at least they try. Today’s birthday girl Mimicat (née Marisa Isabel Lopes Mena) did her stuff in Liverpool and gave us a nicely upbeat number that was clearly Mediterranean. For those that met her, she was good kilometrage and was always ready for a chat or a photo. She’s the type of friendly performer that the fans love to bits. She qualified out of her semi-final, and then the Eurovision organisers decided to put her on second – the scamps. It must have taken the pressure off her possibly winning, but she probably didn’t care. And the fans still love her anyway.

Mimicat is 41 today.

Feliz aniversário, Mimicat!
