Tonight saw the first semi-final of Benidorm Fest – Spain’s fresh, not so new and etcetera selection show for Eurovision 2023.
Like last year, they have bussed a number of acts (18) out to Britain in the Sun out of season, so they can shake their booties without fear of a fat old Englishman leering at them or, indeed, a booze-filled heckle in the hall itself.
Tonight’s first semi-final, broadcast live on TVE, saw Agoney, Alice Wonder, Fusa Nocta and Megara fight their way to the death to qualify for Saturday night’s final. The results were decided by an “expert” jury, a demoscopic jury (in a nod to Sanremo) and a televote, which were combined to give us the four qualifiers.
That “professional” jury has such luminaries as Christer Bjorkman, Katrina and Wiwi himself <insert your own quote here>.
