Romania is returning to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026 after a two-year hiatus, its public broadcaster TVR having secured board approval for the comeback.
The decision follows Romania’s absence in 2024 and 2025. In its most recent appearance in 2023, Romania’s entrant failed to qualify for the final and recorded zero points — the nation’s lowest result ever.
TVR previously cited “financial constraints” when it withdrew from the contest, but the broadcaster’s leadership now signals a reset in its relationship with production partners and aims to rebuild its Eurovision strategy.
TVR President Director General Dan Turturica said: “We had the time to better understand what didn’t work in the relationship between TVR, the music industry and creators. We understood what we need to change on our part to have a more competitive selection process. We appreciate the understanding shown by the European Broadcasting Union, which adapted its invitation to TVR to return to the contest, taking into account the challenges our institution faces.”
Historically, Romania has achieved two third-place finishes: with Luminiţa Anghel & Sistem in 2005, and Paula Seling & Ovi in 2010. It also secured fourth place in 2006 with Mihai Trăistariu.
With the return confirmed, several questions will now come into focus: what form the national selection process will take, how TVR will structure the budget and production, and how Romania intends to rebuild its Eurovision credibility and appeal after such a disappointing recent result.
