Do you think certain countries could have an accidental win. Fans often discuss whether certain countries did win accidentally, or whether there was subterfuge behind that surprise win.
Our friends in Portugal had that win against all odds in 2017. And since then, they’ve only missed one Grand Final. That’s not a bad record. And (there’s always an ‘and’) on only one occasion have they not sung at least partly in Portuguese. Ever. It proves that you don’t need to conform to certain norms by singing in English. Today’s birthday girl Iolanda Costa gave us a performance to remember in Malmö, with her dancers dressed as posh fencers. It was a very monochrome performance, but different enough to finish tenth in the Grand Final. Maybe they can manage a second win soon, and give us all another contest in the land of port.
Iolanda is 31 today.
