Latvia heads to Vienna with Atvara and ‘Ēnā’, selected through Supernova after winning both the jury and the public vote in the final on 14 February. ‘Ēnā’ is also staying in Latvian, and Atvara has drawn the second half of the second semi-final, which at least gives a moody entry like this a fighting chance to create an atmosphere rather than getting lost in the opening traffic.
The song itself is a minimal, dramatic ballad that leans heavily on shadow, restraint and tension rather than obvious release. It’s simple, a little severe, and (to me) rather endearing for that. There are hints of something bigger and messier lurking offstage. Little melodic spikes suggest the arrangement might suddenly overdo the drama. But ‘Ēnā’ is smarter than that, and, thankfully, holds its nerve. That is one of the song’s better qualities. Atvara’s official Eurovision profile describes her sound as cinematic and emotionally raw, and that feels about right: this is more about mood and control than a giant hook.
Atvara is not an unknown plucked from nowhere. She built a following in Latvia through earlier singles, sold-out solo shows last summer, and has already become a fairly visible figure on the local music scene.
History
Latvia has been a touch steadier of late than its reputation suggests. Dons reached the final in 2024 and finished 16th, while Tautumeitas improved to 13th in a weak field last year, Latvia’s best Eurovision placing in a decade. Far from any sort of golden era, but there’s promise.
In 2026, though, ‘Ēnā’ feels like an uphill qualification ask. Juries may appreciate the seriousness, the language choice and the lack of clutter. Televoters maybe not. If the live vocal settles and the staging stays elegantly sparse, Latvia could absolutely pick up admirers. It’s one of my faves at this early stage after my first listen. But admiration and points are not always the same thing. ‘Ēnā’ is one of those entries some people will quietly love, while plenty of others may simply let it drift by. I don’t see it making the final, if I’m honest, but…
